For the past twenty-five plus years, I have been a performance poet and have also been published in numerous anthologies, including self-publishing two collections featuring short stories and poems by Black women in tribute to the legacy of Nina Simone. Creating hand-sewn art on canvas, primarily using fabrics from no-longer needed fashions found in my closet, has become a new passion since becoming a retired seasoned citizen in January 2023. The inspiration, my mother—Corrine B. Powell—who used to embroider doilies for our living-room cocktail and end tables. She left this earthly realm in 2001, gifting me with two tangible pieces of her heart; one, a small woven fiber basket of needles and threads that she had purchased at a neighborhood corner store; and the other, a purple hand-made construction paper card, dotted with stick-on stars and hearts in which she wrote inside: Thinking of you for always thinking of me, Debbie. Here’s to the legacy of My Mother’s Hands.
