Annie Mok to read from “Screentests” at Vox Populi

West Philly-based cartoonist Annie Mok (ACG ’13) will read from Screentests, her most fully-realized work to date, at the Vox Populi Gallery in the Aux Performance Space (319 N. 11th St, 3rd Floor) on Friday, January 17 at 7:00pm. Annie’s gorgeous and heart-wrenching comic Screentests includes two separate comics – Pictures of Candy Darling and Body Language. The first tells the story of Mok’s quest to find out about transgender legend (and Andy Warhol muse) Candy Darling and the personal growth that the author experienced during that time. The second is about Mok coming to terms with being sexually abused as a child.

While the stories can be hard to read due to their subject matter, Mok balances the difficult subject matter with humor and graphic poetry. She’s joined by the incredible creators Ras Mashramani, R.Phillips, and Alex*Laser Life, of the Philly-based queer sci-fi crew Metropolarity; O. Horvath (Spurt of Blood), “hysterical cartoonist / pvd”; and Khristina Acosta of the Philly/NJ-based PoC-only zine distro No Shame Distro, who will be reading from her zine The Birthday Party. A Q&A and signing will follow the readings.

Annie’s work can be found at cargocollective.com/heyanniemok, heyanniemok.tumblr.com, and @HeyAnnieMok on twitter. Please note that some stories read at the event may be triggering.
