Celebrating Latina/o Playwrights March 22

Philadelphia's theatre community teams up with NoPassport for a day celebrating Latina/o playwrights on March 22. With a challenge to theatre artists around the country to produce 30 plays in 30 days by national Latina/o writers, on March 22. Local theatre groups will present the uniquely Philadelphia edition and read 30 plays in one day. How will they do it? Theater and Latino community leaders will gather at 12:00pm on March 22 at the historic Plays & Players Theatre (1714 Delancey Place) for a library style reading session to each read a singular play in silence, and then each will have two minutes to “pitch” their play to the other participants. Out of this, a vote will reveal the winning play to be read to the public that evening at 7pm by professional actors. Opening remarks led by Gabriela Sanchez, and panelists include:

  •  José Avilés, Director of Education at Taller Puertorriqueno
  •  Walter Bilderback, Dramaturg & Literary Manager at The Wilma Theater
  •  Peter Andrew Danzig, Actor, Acting Scholar and MA Candidate, Villanova University
  •  Julia Lopez, Performance Artist, Las Gallas Art Collective
  •  Rachel O’Hanlon Rodriguez, Actor and Company Manager, EgoPo Classic Theater
  •  Maria D. Quiñones-Sánchez, Councilwoman – 7th District, City of Philadelphia
  •  Daniel Student- Producing Artistic Director at Plays and Players
  •  Kimmika L. H. Williams-Witherspoon, Playwright and Associate Professor at Temple University
