DivaNation Jazz Initiative Performance Series

DivaNation Jazz Initiative will be presenting an amazing and memorable performance series on September 12 and 13 at the Mandell Theater (3141 Chestnut Street) at Drexel University.

DivaNation is a Philadelphia Jazz Project initiative, inspired by pianist, composer, and master accompanist, Aaron Graves with music direction by pianist/vocalist Dena Underwood and pianist Kendrah E. Butler.

A Diva is often defined as "a female performer, usually an opera singer, who is extremely talented, but very imperious and temperamental. But the distinguishing factor is that her talent permits somewhat uncouth behavior.” This quote paints a popular image of the immensely talented, female artist all alone, agitated and isolated… a country of one. This only tells a small part of the story of the female singer and works to undermine the efforts of these brave and dedicated artists.

DivaNation is a diverse and developing community of Philadelphia's female singers who evoke the spirit of legendary Jazz singers like Ethel Waters, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday, while simultaneously keeping an eye and ear open to the sounds of the future. The project’s goal is to create a community… a nation of Divas who contribute to each other’s careers and to their community.
