Ghina & Riots Remembrance and Rodney King with director Christine Choy

Scribe Video Center's Producers' Forum presents, Ghina & Riots Remembrance and Rodney King with director Christine Choy at the International House (3701 Chestnut Street) on Tuesday, January 12 at 7:00pm. Cost: $10, $8 Students/Seniors, $5 Scribe and IHP members

Ghina (working title - Hong Kong, Italy, USA, 2016, 35 min) by Oscar nominee Christine Choy, explores the history of Chinese migrants to Ghana by not only examining their personal motivations for relocation, but also delving into the Chinese psyche as Ghana’s foreign “Other.”

It has been 20 years since riots swept LA after the not guilty verdict in the Rodney King trial. The film Riots Remembrance and Rodney King (USA, 2015, 29 min) draws upon the collective memories, of victims, perpetrators, LAPD, LAFD, city councilmen, & witnesses. It includes exclusive never before seen interview footage of Rodney King weeks before his passing in June 2012

Also screening, The Taking of South Central…Philadelphia (USA, 10 min) by Odunde and Scribe Video Center, exploring the displacement of longtime residents and community change in South Philadelphia.

About Christine Choy 

Christine has produced, directed and /or photographer over 100 films. She has received over sixty international awards including an Oscar Nom, a Peabody, and the Best Cinematorgraphy -Sundance. She has received numerous fellowships including, John Simon, Guggenheim, Rockefeller, Asian Cultural Council and Fulbright Senior research Scholarship. Her works have been broadcast on HBO, OBS, Sundance Channel, Lifetime, NHK, Shagnhai TV, KBS, and many other stations. Her work has been featured at Berlin, Cannes, Toronto, Chicago, Montreal, Hong Kong, and Pusan and the Asian American International (NY/LA/SF) Festivals. Ms. Choy is a professor at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and member of AMPAS, was Chair of NYU's Graduate Film/TV Program (1994-1997), (2002-2005), the founding administrator NYU Shanghai (2006-2008), founding director of School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong, Project Vetting committee Film Development Fund, International Trustee Member-Asia Society (1995-2002) She has taught at Yale, Cornell, and SUNY Buffalo.
