Mz Initiative Seeks Visual Artists for Theatre Exhibition

Call for Artists

CONCEPT: Mz. Initiative is seeking artists for an exhibition to accompany two solo theatre pieces. The pieces, entitled Ophelia and Ravished, focus on themes of inter-partner violence, father and daughter relationships, feminism, trauma, isolation, and healing. In Ophelia, Shakespeare’s character emerges from the background of Hamlet’s story and finds her own voice in a world dominated by men. Ravished explores rape culture and the silencing of survivors through Shakespeare’s character Lavinia from Titus Andronicus. After her violent assault, Lavinia's rapists cut out her tongue and chop off her hands in an attempt to keep her from exposing their crime. She uses Ovid's Metamorphosis and a stick in the dirt to finally tell her story.

GOALS: The accompanying art will fill the dance studio where these pieces will be performed. They will provide different interpretations of these themes since everyone’s experiences are unique and encourage a continuation of the dialogue sparked by the two shows.
