Common Field is excited to announce our first open call for proposals for the 2017 Convening, taking place from November 2-5, 2017 in Los Angeles, CA. All members of the Common Field network are invited to submit proposals for Panels, Conversation Sessions, Working Groups, Workshops, Teach-Ins, Reports from the Field, and Projects. You must be a network member to apply. Find out how to join the network on our website. The deadline to apply is Monday, July 17, 2017.

The Common Field Convening brings together 350+ arts organizers from across the country for three days of dialog, discussion, debate, workshops, and practical and social exchanges exploring the state of our field. Attendees share resources, ideas and methods for artist-centered organizations, spaces, projects and practices. The goals of the Convening is to develop local and national peer connectivity, to build knowledge from the field and create a growing set of resources to share broadly. The Convening has been hosted in Chicago in 2011 (Hand-in Glove - Threewalls); New Orleans 2013 (Hand-in-Glove -  Press Street); Minneapolis 2015 (Soap Factory + Works Progress);  and Miami 2016 (BFI, Cannonball, Dimensions Variable, and Locust Projects).

Common Field is working with partners across Los Angeles and organizations representing a range of models, scales, communities and approaches. Lead Los Angeles Convening Partners include Center for Land Use Interpretation, Human Resources, Materials + Applications, and Women’s Center for Creative Work. The current extended network of affiliate partners includes 18th Street Art Center, Clockshop, Contemptorary, Eastside International, Fathomers, Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA), Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), Machine Project, Side Street Projects, The Underground Museum, The Velaslavasay Panorama, and X-tra Contemporary Art Quarterly. National programmatic vision and sessions are also organized by Common Field’s Advisory Council.

This year’s convening provides a critical opportunity for Los Angeles participants to create affiliations, connections, and alliances that can enhance the visibility and support for artists’ organizations in Los Angeles into the future. The convening also provides an important outlet for national members to collectively plot futures for Common Field--brainstorming research trajectories, channels for resource exchanges, and outlining advocacy strategies .

Common Field is committed to supporting all presenters and speakers with an honoraria and travel stipend. Proposals received through the open call will be reviewed by both lead Los Angeles and National Partners.

Applicants will be informed by August 2017 and Convening registration will open in September.
