Tremain Smith: Encaustic Painting Workshop

Tremain Smith (WOO '02) will be teaching an Encaustic Painting Workshop on April 26 at her studio (520 South 59th St) from 10:00am to 4:00pm. The workshop will cover basics of encaustic: making encaustic medium and encaustic paint, fusing, substrates, equipment and safety, as well as ways of creating texture and building and removing layers, carving and branding into the wax, and collaging with wax. Member - $225.00 Non-Member - $240.00, tuition includes supplies.  Encaustic painting uses the medium of pigmented beeswax in modern applications. Workshop includes materials and safety, making encaustic medium and paint, substrates and grounds, techniques of fusing, and transparency and opacity. Depending on the pace of the class, once we cover these foundational practices, we will explore some of the following: collaging, layering, branding, incising, glazing, surface manipulation, and using templates to create texture. Students will experiment with the techniques covered in class to their own stated creative ends. For more information click here.
