Leeway, in partnership with the Women's Medical Fund, will host a presentation on art and cultural strategy by Denicia Cadena on Wednesday, May 14 at 7:00pm at the Leeway Foundation (1315 Walnut Street, Suite 832).
Denicia is the Communications and Cultural Strategy Director at Young Women United, a community organizing and policy project by and for young women of color in New Mexico. YWU was part of the steering committee of the Respect ABQ Women Campaign that defeated the first ever attempt to limit access to safe and legal abortion at the municipal level. Join us as we hear about how Young Women United employs cultural strategy and art in organizing for change, the success story behind the campaign, and how we can use art to incite effective action here in Philadelphia.

Young Women United is a community organizing project by and for young women of color in New Mexico. They believe in the rights of all people to access the information, education, and resources needed to make real decisions about their bodies and lives. YWU works with women and families to identify issues impacting their lives and collectively organize and build policy efforts at the intersections of their identities and lived experiences. They believe social change should come from those most impacted by an issue.
Women's Medical Fund provides direct financial assistance and other support to low-income women and girls in Southeastern Pennsylvania who wish to terminate a pregnancy but cannot afford a safe, legal abortion. In addition to supplying direct aid to low-income women, WMF educates health care professionals about the use of Medicaid to fund abortion, and raises public awareness of the devastating impact of denying access to safe legal abortions.
