Leeway Appoints Denise Beek as Communications Director

After a nationwide search Denise Beek has been hired as Communications Director of the Leeway Foundation by Executive Director Denise M. Brown.

PHILADELPHIA—Denise, a 29-year old communications and arts administration professional, who has previously served stints at the Union Square Awards and the Greater Philadelphia Film Office, will be the youngest staff member to join the foundation, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. She succeeds Maori Karmael Holmes, who will step down January 31 after working at the foundation since June 2007.

“I am honored to join the Leeway family as Communications Director,” says Denise. “The arts have always been close to my heart it is so rewarding to be a part of an organization that believes in the power of social justice by way of creative expression. Leeway is committed to making an impact in ways that are culturally preserving and progressive at the same time, and that’s what excites me about my role here. It is a privilege to promote the dynamic work of this organization and the artists we support."

Denise graduated from Temple University with a BA in Communications & Mass Media. The daughter of Caribbean immigrants, she was born and raised in Montclair, NJ, where she developed a passion to learn through creative expression.

Denise has been involved in Philadelphia arts and culture for nearly a decade. She was Marketing and Multicultural Affairs Coordinator at the Greater Philadelphia Film Office and also worked at the Painted Bride Art Center and the Mann Center for the Performing Arts. At the Union Square Awards she served as Program Associate. Beek is also an active volunteer and currently serves as secretary on the board of the BlackStar Film Festival. She previously served as Communications Chair for the New York Chapter of Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy and on the board of the Black Lily Film & Music Festival.
