Celebrating 25 years of grantmaking and community building among Philadelphia-based artists, cultural producers, and organizers
Since 1993, Leeway Foundation has invested in the lives of artists and cultural producers through direct funding and promotional support. We approach this milestone as an opportunity to tell Leeway’s story – a story grounded in the founder’s feminist principles that explore the intersection of art, culture, community and change.
Over these twenty-five years, Leeway has become more inclusive in how it defines its community in terms of who (practitioners) and what (practice) the foundation supports; initially funding women identified artists, then expanding its criteria to embrace women, trans, and gender nonconforming artists with a vision for social change. Through its grantmaking, programming, and community partnerships, Leeway has been able to keep the conversation around art and social change on the ground and in practice. It is in that spirit of equity, engagement, and exploration that we present the following events to highlight the kind of work we exist to support:
Leeway @ 25 Interview Series
To commemorate Leeway’s history, we’re sharing excerpts from a series of conversation and interviews with former and current staff and board members, grantees and panelists, including Leeway’s founder Linda Lee Alter and her daughter, Sara Milly, whose path-breaking choices set a course that allowed Leeway to evolve. We hope these conversations provide some insights into the important changes that Leeway has undergone, while giving space to honor the individual contributions and accomplishments of a range of artists, change makers and visionaries.
Interviews will be added above as they are published in our monthly newsletter. Subscribe to our newsletter here.
12x12 Performance Series
Leeway partnered with Intercultural Journeys to present a performance series featuring Leeway grantees who create work that furthers social change through art, community and dialogue.
It's a simple formula: 12 minutes of performance. 12 minutes of exploration with the artist. 12 minutes of audience Q&A. Take a 12 minute break. And begin again.
Second Wednesdays, 7:00pm - 8:30pm from May through September. Tickets are $12 or pay-what-you-can ($1 minimum). Click on the links below to read more and RSVP for a specific performance.
