Institute for Contemporary Art Seeking New Registrar

Registrar Position Opening, Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania

 

Responsible for all registrarial aspects across six to ten exhibitions annually for renowned kunsthalle including research, procurement, transportation, insurance and loan documentation of works of art. Manages all aspects of the loan of exhibited artworks including but not limited to: contracts, documentation, shipping logistics, insurance, packing documentation/recommendations, and couriers. Responsible for managing exhibition workflow and exhibition related data including creating condition, inventory, and packing documentation for exhibition curators, assistants, contracted installation crew, work-study students, interns, and others. In concert with the Building Administrator/Chief Preparator, monitors the museum's environment to maintain a stable gallery environment. The Registrar must travel, nationally and internationally, as a museum courier.

The position must work closely with curatorial and preparation staff, as well as with artists, collegial museum staff, and outside vendors. Reporting to the Director of Curatorial Affairs, the position collaborates with the Preparator/Building Administrator, and the entire curatorial team to plan, document, and install/de-install exhibitions. Ideal candidate excels at working flexibly within a fast-paced, rotating, team environment.

Ideal candidate is detail-oriented and sensitive to the necessity of accurate record-keeping with excellent written, oral, and auditory communication skills; possess the ability to see projects through to completion; works well both with others and independently; easily handles multiple projects simultaneously; and prioritize workflow, both for self and other horizontal colleagues. Applicant must have the physical ability to see, handle, lift, push, pull, and carry objects; to crouch, climb, balance, and stand for long periods of time.

Bachelor’s Degree and previous registrarial experience are preferred. Knowledge of museum standards regarding the care and handling of art, and of international shipping and loan management are an asset. Strong computer skills, specifically databases and image editing software are valued. Must have the ability to travel and work including outside business hours. Must be able to represent the museum in person, on the phone, and in writing in a professional manner to donors, lenders, professional colleagues, and all university constituencies.

Primary Responsibilities

Manage registration aspects of the museum’s exhibition program, including on-site/touring, and national/international exhibitions.
Help develop and maintain standardized registrarial exhibition documents and processes.
Coordinate loan activity, both incoming and touring.
Work with Director of Curatorial Affairs to monitor registration budgets related to exhibitions and loans. Perform other administrative tasks as necessary.
Bachelor’s degree preferred
Previous Registrar experience preferred
Record of working in fast-paced detail-oriented profession helpful
An interest in contemporary art preferred
