Losang Samten: Tibetan Sand Mandala

April 23 - 27, 2018 | 2:30 - 7 PM Daily

The public is invited to stop by to observe, and to speak with Losang about the stories and messages embedded in this art of Tibet, his homeland.

This year, Losang is bringing the Mandala of Compassion to life in our gallery through his meditative and breathtaking process.

“Mandalas are healing for an individual's body, speech, mind and the environment,” Losang explains.

The Mandala of Compassion features the Buddha of Compassion whose name, Chenrezig, means unconditional love to all beings.

In response to messages, acts and policies of hatred and greed in our contemporary world -- messages, acts and policies that endanger individuals, families and communities -- we at the Philadelphia Folklore Project asked Losang to create this particular design. The nurturing of compassion is one potent way to counter these assaults on dignity and safety.

On Friday, April 27, Losang will preside over a dismantling ceremony beginning at 6:00 pm during which the mandala is ritually swept into a vase. The sand is then returned to nature.
