Mural Arts Program Seeks Artists for Collaborative Community Project

The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PP&R) have launched a collaboration that aligns PP&R’s objective to develop high-level practices and leadership in “out of school” activities with Mural Arts’ mission to unite artists and communities through a collaborative process that transforms public spaces and individual lives.

Arts & Artists Outdoors (A2O), an artist residency program, uses free arts programming and community engagement to foster an appreciation of the natural and environmental assets of Philadelphia. Each artist in residence will be paired with a selected recreation center, where they will lead twice weekly art workshops for youth and two community workshops. During these workshops, the artist will lead participants in engaging, hands-on arts activities that highlight the natural resources of the nearby green space and culminate in a temporary or permanent artwork that will be dedicated and housed at the recreation center.

Through A2O, the hope is to offer artists and communities not only the opportunity to create sustainable and site-specific artwork, but to use their artistic vision and talents to create a shared feeling of community and environmental stewardship.

Unlike previous sessions, Mural Arts will select 5 artists to work for both the Fall & Spring sessions. Each artist will be expected to stay at the same site for the year, and complete one final project by the end of the Spring session.

Fall 2014 session: Monday, October 6th- December 12th, 2014
Spring 2015 session: Monday, March 9th- Friday May 15th, 2014
