Naima Lowe’s Trouble Opens At The Art Department

Former Board Member Naima Lowe's opening reception for her solo show, Trouble, at The Art Department (1638 E Berks St) will take place Friday, November 4 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

Read Naima’s artist statement below:

"I’m a 37 year old Black artist and educator born in Middletown, CT, raised in various parts of New England and reared as a working artist in Philadelphia, PA where I got my degree in Film and Media Arts from Temple University. I currently live Olympia, WA where I teach video and performance art at one of the last experimental, public, liberal arts colleges in the nation, The Evergreen State College.

I use performance, video, photo and text to explore conditions of othered-ness and to celebrate bodies that move/breathe/sing/play where they are not supposed to belong. I am embedded in (and indebted to) traditions of black utterance and knowledge production. I speak in codes. I hide in plain sight as a body that’s simultaneously hyper-visible and impossible to see. In my most recent work I’ve considered the “natural” world as a site and cypher, staging encounters between the unruly specter of my body and the land and landscapes that simultaneously alienate and soothe me. I treat water, dirt and sky as archives of historically situated meaning and contradiction. I embrace an aesthetic and politics of intimacy, using the vulnerability of my body, voice and emphatically poetic gestures to signal that it’s ok to, you know, really feel it.

The air is thick, the river is cold, and I’m just here singing about the birds and the bees."
