NALAC Announces Transnational Cultural Remittances Grant Program

The National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC) announces Transnational Cultural Remittances Grant Program (TCR). Launched in 2008 with support from the Ford Foundation, the TCR grant program supports exemplary cultural exchanges that promote grassroots artistic collaboration and strengthen social networks between the United States, Mexico and Central America. Deadline: March 27

The competitive TCR grant program is open to individuals, collectives and community-based organizations in the United States, Mexico and Central America. Successful projects demonstrate a continuous and ongoing exchange whereby artistic activity supports, preserves or extends the cultural practices between linked communities in two or more of the following countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and the United States.

Cultural remittances can take different forms and may be transmitted through direct personal activity or electronic means of transmission. Cultural remittances are rooted in everyday life and demonstrate reciprocal or two-way impact. The TCR grant supports projects that build upon and extend cultural knowledge across borders and result in an ongoing exchange of knowledge, customs and creativity from one country to another.

Just as there are systems in place to transmit financial remittances between migrant populations and their home communities, transnational populations have developed artistic remittances through which cultural or social capital is exchanged to promote community well-being, human rights, social justice, economic empowerment and interconnectedness among members. The NALAC Transnational Cultural Remittances grant program aims to support emerging and established projects which fulfill this function.
