Producers’ Forum: Rebel directed by María Agui Carter

Scribe Video Center presents Rebel directed by María Agui Carter. Shrouded in mystery and long the subject of debate, the amazing story of Loreta Janeta Velazquez, a Confederate soldier turned Union Spy, is one of the Civil War's most gripping forgotten narratives. This Cuban immigrant was in combat 150 years ago—one of the estimated 1000 women who secretly served as soldiers during the American Civil War. Rebel is the story of a woman, a myth, and the politics of national memory. January 27 at 7pm at the International House (3701 Chestnut Street). Tickets are $10, $7 students/seniors, $5 Scribe and IHP members.

María Agui Carter is an award-winning filmmaker whose most recent film Rebel won a 2014 Erik Barnouw Honorable Mention as best historical film. Carter grew up an undocumented "Dreamer," graduated from Harvard, and is a trustee of National Association of Latino Independent Producers.
