2023 Art and Change Grant – $2,500

Lars Shimabukuro will be offering a free week-long workshop for  BIPOC queer students at Weaver House, a weaving studio in the Bok Building in South Philadelphia. Access to learning how to weave is limited and expensive, and these spaces are typically very cisgender, straight, and white. Students will receive yarn, a frame loom kit to take home after the workshop, weaving worksheets to continue their weaving practice, and a $140 stipend for their time. Lars is interested in teaching weaving as a somatic practice, as well as an artistic one, and hopes the project can create space for people to play, have bodily autonomy, safely explore risk, and grow in community.
