2009 Art and Change Grant – $2,500

Tatiana and Cymande will produce Porches, a documentary that will examine the lives of some of Philadelphia’s greatest treasures, the elderly. Porches will capture the oral traditions and historical events of 5 African American women ages 95-105, who have lived in Philadelphia and witnessed the city’s highs and lows. Tatiana and Cymande will encourage future generations to value and appreciate the importance, wisdom, and life experiences of these remarkable women. This documentary will be used as an educational tool in the Philadelphia school system, challenging youth to reconnect to their elders and empower them to be more conscious of their heritage and community.
