Fall 2011 Exhibits

Artworks from local visual artists adorn walls of non-typical spaces such as hospital waiting rooms, coffee shops and community centers to ignite social change

Philadelphia - Art should be enjoyed by everyone. Leeway challenges the practice of viewing artwork exclusively in artistic institutions by launching a series of non-traditional exhibitions from artists who have all received a Leeway grant or award. The Philadelphia-based foundation supports women and transgender artists who create social change through their artwork. It has funded a variety of artists from emerging and young artists to well-known Philadelphia legends like Sonia Sanchez, Ursula Rucker and Bahamadia.

Starting in September, Leeway will kick off a series of visual art exhibitions in non-traditional arts venues—venues outside of galleries, studios and museums. The purpose of these exhibits is not only to support our grantees by giving them increased visibility, but also to bring artwork into spaces where communities already gather on their own rather than attempting to bring them into the world of art galleries.

The exhibits are as follows:

September-October: Geechee Girl Rice Café (6825 Germantown Ave.) Featuring Ife Nii Owoo and Barabara Bullock

September-October: Paoli Cancer Center (255 W. Lancaster Ave., Paoli, PA 19301) featuring Christina Johnson, Genevieve Coutroubis, Lorelei Shingledecker, Toni Kersey

October-November: Taller Puertorriqueno Education Center (2721 North 5th St.) Featuring Marta Sanchez and Yaba Amgborale Blay

October-December: Leeway Foundation (1315 Walnut St., Suite 832) in collaboration with POST Exhibition, Featuring Anula Shetty, Michelle Myers, Beth Nixon, bex*, Candy Depew, Elizabeth Fiend, Judy Gelles, Naima Lowe, Emmy Bean, and Nanette Acker Clark

December-January: Greenline Café (4239 Baltimore Ave.) featuring Jardyn Lake and Takeya Trayer
