Special Events at BlackStar Film Festival

Leeway in partnership with the 2013 BlackStar Film Festival presents three special programs:

Screening: Arts Shorts at The Barnes Foundation

This screening will feature short experimental and animated works by visual artists and filmmakers Hank Willis Thomas, Mickalene Thomas, Terence Nance, Wangechi Mutu, and grantee tiona.m. (ATR ’12, LTA ‘09, ACG ‘07) on Friday August 2, from 6:45pm to 8:00pm at The Barnes Foundation (2025 Benjamin Franklin Parkway).

Screening: Living Thinkers: An Autobiography of Black Women in the Ivory Tower

This documentary film directed by Roxana Walker-Canton and filmed by Leeway board member and grantee Tina Morton (LTA ’06, ACG ’06, ’05), who served as Director of Photography. Living Thinkers examines the intersection of race, class, and gender in the experiences of contemporary black women professors and administrators through their education narratives from girlhood to the present. Taking place on Friday August 2, from 4:15pm to 5:45pm at International House of Philadelphia (3701 Chestnut St).

Panel: Black Women, Body Image, and Hollywood

This discussion will explore black women's body issues on the big screen, behind the scenes, and how filmmakers can begin to broaden the definition of beauty through their casting choices. Panelists include: actress/advocate Ellen Domingos, actress/model Michelle Trotter, and actress/dancer Stacey Sargeant. This panel will be moderated by grantee Yaba Blay (ACG ’10). The conversation will be preceded by Stacey’s short documentary Though I’m Not Perfect. Taking place on Saturday August 3 from 1:00pm to 2:30pm at Drexel University (3141 Chestnut Street, Papadakis Auditorium Room 120).

In addition to these events, Sosena Solomon (ACG ’13) will be screening her film Merkato, at 8:30pm on Friday August 2 at International House of Philadelphia (3701 Chestnut St).
