Ten Philadelphia Area Women Artists Receive April Window of Opportunity Grants

PHILADELPHIA, PA —The Leeway Foundation is pleased to announce the selection of ten women artists to receive its April 2002 Window of Opportunity (WOO) grants. The grants provide short-term, immediate assistance to individual women artists living in the Philadelphia area who wish to take advantage of specific opportunities that significantly benefit their work or increase its recognition. Grants totaling $16,369 were awarded to:

Susan Bank (Philadelphia county) $2,000
Photography: Exhibition at Fototeca Gallery in Havana, Cuba. Support towards prints/matting, travel and lodging.

Samantha Barrow (Philadelphia county) $2,000
Spoken Word/Writing: Cross country tour as an ambassador for Ladyfest Philly. Support towards travel, lodging and promotional materials.

Barbara Botting (Philadelphia county) $1,320
Mixed Media: Creation of textile print as part of an extended Fabric Workshop apprenticeship. Support towards materials.

Tina Bracciale (Philadelphia county) $1,000
Dance: Production of collaborative show for Philadelphia choreographers. Support towards equipment, facilities rentals and promotional expenses.

Janette Hough (Philadelphia county) $1,099
Aerial Dance: Advanced study with Terry Sendgraff at Boulder's Aerial Dance Festival. Support towards travel, lodging and equipment rental.

Tania Isaac Hyman (Philadelphia county) $1,800
Dance/Multimedia: Production as part of the CEC's New Edge Residency program. Support towards equipment rental.

Teresa Jaynes (Philadelphia county) $1,990
Visual Arts: Creation of prototype for limited edition artist book with the Rosenbach Museum and Library and Borowsky Center/UArts. Support towards materials and production expenses.

Christine Meck (Philadelphia county) $1,660
Photography: Exhibition of work at Silicon Gallery. Support towards prints and promotional materials.

Na Tanya 'Davina' Stewart (Philadelphia county) $2,000
Performance Art: Participation in residency teaching/performance program as part of Youth Against AIDS Network in South Africa. Support towards travel and meals.

Dorothy Wilkie (Philadelphia county) $1,500
Folk Arts: Residency with Ballet Folklorico Cutumba in Santiago, Cuba. Support towards travel, lodging and per diem.

The Leeway Foundation's Window of Opportunity (WOO) grants support specific, concrete and timely opportunities that have a significant impact on an artist's work, such as an exceptional chance for advanced study with a significant mentor; travel associated with a residency, reading, performance or exhibition; or rental of equipment, or purchase of materials needed to complete a scheduled project. Women artists working in all disciplines are encouraged to apply and may request up to $2,000.

To be eligible for WOO, artists must be female, 20 years of age or older, current, permanent residents of the Philadelphia five county area, and have already secured a commitment from a recognized organization or sponsor for the project for which they are applying. Full time students are not eligible.

Founded in 1993, The Leeway Foundation supports individual women artists, arts programs and arts organizations, focusing on the Greater Philadelphia region, in order to help them achieve personal and community transformation. Leeway supports women artists of all backgrounds, traditions, art forms and stages of development.
In addition to the Window of Opportunity grants, The Leeway Foundation makes awards annually to emerging and established artists in a selected literary or visual arts discipline. 2002 Awards will be granted in Photography/ Works On Paper. 2003 awards will be granted in Fiction/Creative Nonfiction.

The Window of Opportunity (WOO) grant provides financial assistance of up to $1,500 to Leeway grant and award recipients to help them take advantage of imminent, time-sensitive opportunities to support their art for social change practice. The Community Care Fund (CCF) provides financial assistance of up to $1,250 to Leeway grant and award recipients to support with immediate and essential emergency needs. [read more]
