April Lee
April Lee is a dedicated community activist based in Philadelphia, deeply committed to supporting families impacted by harmful systems—including the child welfare (family policing) system, the carceral system, and other institutional structures that disproportionately harm her community. As a founding member of Philly Voice for Change, April plays a pivotal role in engaging and mobilizing community members, organizers, and advocates to demand systemic change.
Her work extends beyond the city, contributing to national movements for justice, abolition, and family unity. She serves on the advisory boards of Stop Over reporting Our People (STOP), The Family Justice Law Center, United Family Advocates, and additional initiatives focused on dismantling oppressive systems and protecting family rights.
April’s commitment to her community is reflected in both her advocacy and her everyday actions—whether feeding unhoused neighbors, facilitating life-skills workshops, mentoring women, or providing support to families navigating institutional harm. Beyond her organizing work, April is an artist at heart. She is an accomplished writer and poet, has performed on multiple stages throughout Philadelphia and beyond, and finds creative expression through painting and other art forms.

Overview
April Lee’s project, Art in Advocacy, will use multimedia art to engage and uplift parents impacted by the child welfare system, particularly those who have lost their children due to poverty or substance use. Through painting, poetry, and statement clothing, participants will reclaim their stories and transform grief into creative resistance. Partnering with Temple University, Why Not Prosper, and Philly Voice, April will facilitate four healing circles that address loss, shame, and identity through art-making and community dialogue. The project will culminate in a Black History Month event at Temple University, where parents will unveil a large collective canvas and wearable artworks that reflect their shared stories and visions of healing.
