Asake Denise Foye Jones’s project, The PepperPot Women of Philadelphia, will be a mixed-media fiber art and film installation honoring the free and self-emancipated Black women who sold West African-rooted Pepperpot soup on the streets of colonial Philadelphia. Through quilting, appliqué, layering, and beadwork, Asake will reimagine these women as cultural preservationists, entrepreneurs, and agents of liberation whose daily acts of care and creativity sustained community and resistance. Accompanied by a poetic short film that weaves narration, sound, and archival-inspired imagery, the installation will debut at The Colored Girl’s Museum in summer 2026. Asake will also host a Saturday Soup Circle Sip and artist talk, inviting participants to share Pepperpot soup, while exchanging stories about food as a vessel of memory and Black feminist resistance.
