And I Bear Witness to your times/and our times//then and now//and to all that may connect us/and our times//now and eventually

Serving as a palimpsest of the racism and fears all too prevalent in America today, narratives of the WWII internment of Japanese Americans find resonance with immigrant and Muslim American artists providing a contemporary perspective on the dynamics of community identity, division, solidarity, and strength. In conversation with Matthew Hashiguchi’s documentary Good Luck Soup, which examines the reintegration of Japanese Americans into U.S. society post WWII.

What Fuels Development? is showing Friday, November 4 at 7:30pm, Saturday, November 5 at 3:00pm and Sunday, November 5 at 7:30pm.

Inspired by true incidents in Los Angeles’ Skid Row neighborhood, What Fuels Development? is a devised theater piece exploring the mechanics of displacement in an age of immense income inequality, and Skid Row’s fight to not be overwhelmed by an alcohol-fueled entertainment district. To be performed by Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD), the first performance group in the nation made up principally of homeless and formerly homeless people, with local guest performers.

In partnership with Broad Street Ministry, this presentation is part of a continuum of Asian Arts Initiative’s work with the local homeless community and commitment to addressing civic issues as we work for the equitable development of our own neighborhood.
