New Trans Life & Liberation Art Series

The Trans Life & Liberation Art Series creates collaborative portraits about and with living trans people on the frontlines of the trans liberation movement.

For more than 50 years, trans women and femmes of color have been on the frontlines of the struggle for trans and queer liberation, but they continue to face an epidemic of violence, criminalization and oppression, and their leadership continues to be erased and exploited. The Trans Life & Liberation Art Series is a response to Janet Mock’s call to “begin uplifting trans women of color, speaking their names and praises, in their lives.”

Participants work with a trans artist of their choice to create a portrait they love, and all artists are also paid for their work. Participants receive an honorarium, a framed print, and digital scan of their portrait, and they co-own the art and can use it however they want. Art is created collaboratively with participants on a weekly basis, and shared every Tuesday on Facebook.
