Crossroads: A Celebration of Latina Artists opens October 19

Exhibition Dates: October 19-November 21, 2012

The Philadelphia-based Leeway Foundation supports women and transgender artists who create social change. Our fall exhibition, CROSSROADS: A CELEBRATION OF LATINA ARTISTS, will be at the foundation’s office at 1315 Walnut Street in Center City. The exhibit features works by four artists—two of whom are previous recipients of Leeway grant and award programs— and includes paintings, textiles, video, and mixed-media.

The exhibition opens October 19, 2012 in conjunction with the National Alliance of Latino Arts and Culture (NALAC) Conference, which is being held on the east coast for the first time in the organization’s 23-year history. Featuring Ana Guissel (ACG ’11)Kukuli Velarde (LTA ’11, WOO ’99)Yasmin Hernandez, and Marlène Ramírez-Cancio in collaboration with the Fulana collective, it will remain on view through November 21, 2012.

“A crossroads is a place where roads meet, an intersection, the borderlands, la frontera. It is in these places that exchange (or social change) takes place,” says Leeway’s executive director Denise M. Brown. “Each of the artists featured in this exhibit are grappling with duality in their work—be it resistance and assimilation, beauty and terror, or tradition and modernity. Their work is refreshingly transformational.”

An artist-led tour of the work will be held on Friday October 19 from 5:30pm-6:30pm followed by an opening reception featuring DJ precolumbian from 7:00pm-9:00pm. To RSVP please email [email protected] or call 215.545.4078.

Leeway’s offices are located at 1315 Walnut Street, Suite 832 between 13th and Juniper Streets. Viewings are during office hours and by appointment only. To make an appointment call (215) 545-4078.

For interview requests, images, or more information please contact Maori Holmes at (215) 545-4078, ext. 12 or email [email protected].
