Tomorrow’s Girls & Women to Preform UNSILENCED: The Choreopoem

Tomorrow’s Girls and Women, a youth empowerment program organized by Pat McLean (ACG ’11, LTA ’06, ACG ’05) will present an interactive multidisciplinary performance entitled UNSILENCED: The Choreopoem, at the Venice Island Performing Arts and Recreation Center (7 Lock Street) on March 12 at 6pm .

This interactive dramatic expression combines poetry, dance, music, song and drama to honor the legacies of four women artists who used their talents to help change the world.

UNSILENCED features the work of African American Poet and activist Sonia Sanchez, American Singer-Songwriter and civil rights activist Nina Simone, radical Black feminist “warrior poet” Audre Lorde, and dancer-activist Katherine Dunham.

“Women have been silenced in many ways for many years. This project celebrates women's' faith, courage and spirit, out loud, and Unsilenced. In this collaboration of poetry, prayers, dance, songs, and stories written and performed by women from all walks of life, faiths and ages, we give voice to those who often don’t have an opportunity to speak.”

Tomorrow’s Girls & Women is a youth-based program created to provide a positive and supporting environment for young girls by helping them develop self-esteem and life skills that promote leadership, development, cultural awareness, and community revitalization. UNSILENCED will be performed in collaboration with the For Women Collective.

Proceeds from this performance will benefit the Tomorrow’s Girls & Women Summer Enrichment Program; an eight-week youth program in which participants will be exposed to self-discovery & self-esteem building games, team interactions, social etiquette, cultural events, and so much more.  This will be offered to girls age 7-15 totally free of charge.

Admission is $10. Tickets can be purchased here
